The Indians loaded up the bus early Saturday morning and headed to the Plex in Fort Wayne. Conner Walser and Ava Jefferis both looking to give it everything they had for a chance to advance to the state meet. Conner Walser got things started in the Boys race that had a field of 247 runners on the line. Walser was lined up with Monroe Central runner Eli Chamberlain and they had a great start and were able to maintain a top 50 position after the first mile and weaving through the wooded section. Through mile two Conner was still looking very strong and on track to PR. With 600 meters to go it looked like Walser was on pace to PR and give himself a shot at moving on. After making the turn towards the finish Conner was on the gas as he could begin to see the time and once he crossed the finish line he placed 45th with a time of 16:52. Conner has been chasing a sub 17 5k since he was a freshman but bad luck had always got him. In the four years while running Conner had races with major cramps, a shoe blow out and a hip injury. Through it all he stayed positive and in his final race of his high school career did what he set out to do! In the girls race the Indians were once again represented by Junior Ava Jefferis as she was making her third appearance at the Regional. All season long Ava has been very impressive with her ability to start well and keep pushing to the finish and Saturday was no different. With 246 runners on the line Ava got a great start and after the first mile she was in the top 150 and looked great. After the second mile Ava began making passes with fellow county runner Erica Grubbs as they had done all season. Coming into the woods with 600 meters to go Ava kept pushing the pace up the hill to make the turn to the finish. As Jefferis came to the finish line she was giving it everything she had and crossed the finish line in 140th place with a time of 21:58. While this wasn't a PR for Ava this was the second race in a row that she ran sub 22 minutes and she would have set a new PR with better conditions as it began raining during the race. Thank you parents for all of the support this season we really appreciate it all of you! Congratulations to Conner on a great high school career
