BY RICK REED News-Gazette Sports Editor It's a coach's nightmare, and even worse for the player and the team – a serious injury to the quarterback. Union City's talented freshman quarterback Jayson Connor on Friday suffered a broken collarbone in the first quarter at Hagerstown and could very well miss the rest of the season. Although the Indians do have a capable replacement in junior Alec Spence, the injury is a devastating blow to Union City's team. The Indians managed a couple of scores in the first half, but couldn't keep pace in a 56-14 Tri-Eastern Conference loss to the Tigers. The loss kept the Tribe winless on the season at 0-3 as they prepare for Friday's home "Senior Night" game against Knightstown. Union City coach Keith Maloy remains encouraged because he sees some improvement from his younger players. "We've got our Senior Night this Friday with Knightstown so we're going to honor our seniors and continue to improve," he said. Thrust into a role in which he hadn't expected, Spence completed 3 of 12 passes for 37 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions. Connor had completed 4 of 7 for 67 yards before the injury. Union City did manage 134 yards rushing the football led by Spence with 57 and Bradin Daniels with 45. Jace O'Connor caught a couple of passes, one for a touchdown. Brayden Huggins had a big 50-yard reception. Turnovers again plagued the Indians as they fumbled four times and lost them all. On defense, the Indians had no answers for the Tigers senior Mason Romack, who carried seen times for 259 yards. The Tigers racked up 449 total yards rushing. Daniels led Union City with six tackles.
