Boys battle to 3rd place finish at County Meet

By Justin Daniels | May 3, 2024 11:47 AM

The boys traveled to Winchester on Thursday night to do battle with the rest of the county for the County Track Meet and came away with a lot of very tired athletes, many new personal best performances and a 3rd place finish. The days leading up to the meet the team knew they were going to have to sacrifice a lot to have a chance to win and every one of the athletes did just that! The 4x800 relay team of Bradin Daniels, Alec Spence, Conner Walser was missing Alvaro Delgado due to illness and Wilson Aguliar-Mendez was willing to step in last minute and ran the race of his life to help the relay team finish first and set a new PR. The race got the meet off to an exciting start as Wilson was able to pass for first just steps away from the finish line. Jayson Connor and Luis Nieto were up next in the 110mh and both ran very good races and were able to do exactly what was needed for the meet. Nieto just missed his PR for the hurdles finished 6th and Connor competing with a sore back was able to place 2nd. Colton Emrick and Alec Spence lined up in a very competitive 100m dash finished 5th and 6th. After crossing the finish line the difference from 1st-8th was just over one second. In the 1600m run it was Bradin Daniels and Joseangel Perez representing the Indians. Bradin running the 1600 for just the second time ever beat his previous best time by 31 seconds to finish 2nd with a time of 5:05.73. Joseangel was running the 1600 for the first time after a last minute switch and stepped right in to place 7th with a time of 5:36.52. The 4x100 relay team of Colton Emrick, Wilson Aguilar-Mendez, Joseangel Perez and Scott O'Connor were next for the Indians and were able to place 3rd to keep the Indians scoring points. In the 400m dash it was all Alec Spence and Jackson Cowper as they both crossed the finish line in 1st and 2nd. Spence finished 1st and was able to run a sub 54 second race for the first time in his career finishing with a time of 53.88 and Cowper finishing with a new PR one again with a time of 55.55 and a second place finish. Luis Nieto was running the 300mh for the first time after practicing them this week and was able to run to a 4th place finish and just missing out on 3rd place by two seconds. In the 800m run it was Conner Walser and Bradin Daniels ready to get after it and that they did. In the 800m races both have ran this year they have been right with each other and that didn't change at the county meet. Daniels was able to battle his way to a second place finish with a new season best time and Walser wasn't far behind placing 3rd for the Indians. Jackson Cowper and Colton Emrick were both able to finish 5th and 6th for the Indians in the 200m dash. Emrick placed 5th after running his season best and Cowper just missing the time he ran a week ago to place 6th. In the 3200m run it was Conner Walser and Scott O'Connor. Walser running the 3200m for the first time since since his sophomore year got off to a great start then began to save some energy due to he was in the very next race was still able to run an impressive race and finish 3rd. Scott O'Connor got off to a blazing start taking off out of no where to lead the first two laps of the race and was able to take off 23 seconds from his race a week ago. After hearing the strategy I was informed that it was the slingshot move like they use in racing that got him to the front. So expect some more big races from O'Connor in the next couple weeks. The 4x400 relay team of Alec Spence, Bradin Daniels, Jackson Cowper and Conner Walser were up to close out the night and try and keep the streak alive of winning the relay. After all of the work the boys did during the meet they were able to come out and run a huge race to win and keep the win streak alive. The last time the relay team lost at county was 2019. Grant Elliott and Jayson Connor both had great days at High Jump to score big points for the Indians placing 3rd and 4th. Elliott has been impressive all year after not competing in track last season and as the season goes on will continue to get better. Connor was able to take the 4th place spot missing the same height as Elliott. The Indians will continue to get better at high jump with these two athletes there. Long Jump saw Jackson Cowper and Colton Emrick with Cowper finishing 4th with his best jump since the end of March and Emrick in long jump for the first time since the end of March was able to place 8th. Kolton Mills lead the Indians in Shot Put throwing a big PR and placing 4th. Mills beat his previous best by nearly two feet. Michael Miller was far behind Mills as he placed 5th to also score points. While both Indians had great throws the top three in the event also had their best throws as well achieving either PR's or season best throws. Brayden Timmerman had a big day in Discus as he was able to throw to a new PR and a 4th place finish. Timmerman has been impressive all season and with Thursday's throw he beat his distance from last year by an impressive 27 feet. Kolton Mills was able to place 6th and just missing out on the top five by eight feet. Mills is another one who has been very impressive at discus this season and we hope to have back next year.
