Girls basketball awaits sectional opponent Union City will play either Monroe Central or Union after earning bye Reigning sectional and regional champion Union City earned a bye in the opening round of IHSAA Class A Sectional 56. The Indians (6-14) will play either Monroe Central (17-6) or Union (6-15) in Friday’s semifinal. “We’ve been watching some film on them,” Union City Head Coach Sarah Black said. “We’ve played both teams in the regular season, so we have an idea of who they are and what we need to do.” Monroe Central plays Union in the tournament’s opening game on Tuesday at 6 p.m., while Blue River (4-18) will play Randolph Southern (12-8) at 7:30 p.m. Cambridge City Lincoln (5-16) also earned a bye, and will play either Blue River or Randolph Southern. Senior Oaklee Reichard leads Union City with 14.8 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 2.7 steals and 0.7 blocked shots per game. Gabby Ordonez, also a senior, is second on the team with 6.6 points, 1.4 assists and 1.7 steals per game, while junior Campbell Kerns is second on the team with 5.7 rebounds per game. “They’ve just been tremendous for us for the last four years,” Black said. “Both of them have played varsity minutes for the last four years. It’s always sad to see them go, but you know that they’re going to go on and do some really cool things, and it’s nice to see them grow and develop.” Union City is coming off of a 68-35 win over Hagerstown on Senior Night. Reichard and Ordoñez celebrated their special night with 28 and 12 points, respectively, while sophomore Novah Mote also finished in double figures, adding 11 points, and Kerns chipped in 9. Union City defeated Union 54-53 in the season-opener in double overtime. If Monroe Central wins on Tuesday, this could be the third time Union City faces Monroe Central this season. The Golden Bears defeated Union City 48-26 on Dec. 4, and 51-18 in the Randolph County Tournament Championship on Jan. 11. “They’re going to play on Tuesday, so we’ve got a little bit more time to prepare and a few more days to rest and get our legs underneath us and we should be ready to go on Friday,” Black said. The sectional championship is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. The sectional champion advances to the regional on Feb. 14.
